For over 25 years, the Arts Alive Program has been one of the many ways California Musical Theatre (CMT) works to promote accessibility and strengthen its presence in the Sacramento community. Each summer, CMT reaches out to over one hundred community service organizations providing care and resources to underserved members of the Sacramento region, inviting them to performances at CMT’s historic Music Circus.
Arts Alive patrons are given the opportunity to attend a live performance at a drastically discounted rate and take part in a talk-back session where actors and artistic staff present background information on the production and field questions from the audience. Additionally, CMT often incorporates a tactile experience – passing around costume pieces and props – giving blind and low-vision Arts Alive patrons the ability to directly interact with and shape their personal theatre experience. And finally, the afternoon is topped off with popcorn and refreshments for all.
In addition to creating an excellent afternoon of theatre to enrich and delight, the Arts Alive program allows CMT the opportunity to promote the arts and give something back to the community that has been our home for over 60 years. For young people, exposure to the arts can have a lasting impression, fostering creative expression and giving them new tools with which to explore a wider world. For people of any age, theatre can be a much needed respite, an opportunity to relax and watch a beautiful story unfold. California Musical Theatre believes access to the arts is a fundamental need of any community and Art Alive is one of the many ways CMT hopes to connect with those in and around Sacramento who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience the magic of live, professional theatre.
Past Arts Alive partners include: Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sacramento, Sacramento Children’s Home, WEAVE, Breakthrough Sacramento, Society for the Blind, Wellspring Women’s Center. More than 900 guests from 35 to 40 organizations are served each year and while the program caters to a wide variety of organizations, over 80 percent of our Arts Alive patrons are young adults experiencing live theatre for the first time. If your organization is interested in partnering with us in our efforts to engage the Sacramento community and further the arts, please contact CMT’s Community Programs Coordinator below.
