SALARY: $19.00 – $20.70 per hour 

REPORTS TO: Costume Director, Assistant Costume Shop Manager

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Act as the liaison between the Costume Designers, the Cutter/Drapers and Stitchers for assigned productions. Responsible for taking and relaying fitting notes.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Take fitting notes and assist during costume fittings.
  • Prepare and distribute costume notes to the Stitchers based on priority and ability.
  • Ensure costumes notes are completed in accordance with deadlines such as fittings, photo call, dress rehearsals and opening performance.
  • Oversee Stitcher workflow, progress, and quality; instruct Stitchers on the proper execution of tasks.
  • When necessary, cut fabric according to patterns and instructions developed by the Cutter/Draper.
  • Attend dress rehearsals.
  • Maintain a record of restore notes for rental costumes to be completed prior to their return.
  • Stitch when needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Previous theatrical costume shop experience preferred. 
  • Thorough knowledge of costume construction, periods, and terminology. 
  • Ability to teach new or different sewing techniques to Stitchers when needed.
  • Ability to give clear directions, encourage questions, and answer them with patience and clarity when working with staff, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Remain calm under stress; deescalate when appropriate. Have the interpersonal awareness to read a situation and the needs of those involved. Resolve conflict calmly and succinctly.
  • Ability to skillfully operate a variety of sewing machines including but not limited to single needle industrial, industrial overlock, merrow or serger/overlock, domestic straight and zig-zag machines.
  • Ability to operate industrial steam iron.
  • Neat and legible handwriting. 
  • Ability to take notes from the artistic team and implement necessary changes.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards and implementation. 
  • Ability to set a standard of excellence and inspire a sense of group responsibility among team members.
  • Exhibited self-reliance, creative problem-solving skills, and willingness to seek out all possible solutions to challenges.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • Frequently required to use repetitive hand motions and to reach and bend. 
  • Ability to hear verbal notes and write them down on paper.
  • Regularly required to stand, sit, talk, see, and hear.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. to a height of 3-5 feet.
