SALARY: $23.00 – $25.90 per hour

REPORTS TO: Costume Director, Assistant Costume Shop Supervisor, Costume Designer

OVERALL RESPONSIBILITY

Collaborate with the Costume Designer and oversee the build and alterations of costumes for assigned productions, including flat patterning and draping when necessary. Attend costume fittings to assist with fitting of garments.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop patterns and cut fabrics when necessary for costume builds.
  • Instruct and supervise First Hands and Stitchers on the proper assembly of each costume.
  • Determine and mark the necessary alterations of each costume piece in collaboration with the Costume Designer during fittings.
  • Prepare and distribute costume notes to the Stitchers based on priority and ability in collaboration with the First Hands.
  • Ensure costume notes are completed in accordance with deadlines such as fittings, dress rehearsals and opening performance in collaboration with First Hands.
  • Oversee Stitcher progress and quality.
  • Attend dress rehearsals as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Costume Director.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive experience in costume construction and pattern development.
  • Previous theatrical costume shop experience preferred.
  • Ability to interpret a costume sketch into a pattern, its component parts, into a realized garment.
  • Ability to teach new or different stitching techniques to Stitchers when needed.
  • Ability to give clear directions, encourage questions, and answer them with patience and clarity when working with staff, interns and/or volunteers.
  • Ability to plan and anticipate potential setbacks.
  • Possess a strong attention to detail. 
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, efficiency, multi-tasking, and ability to prioritize and self-motivate.
  • Ability to plan ahead and anticipate potential setbacks.
  • The ability to work both independently and as a positive team member.
  • Excellent communication skills and collaborative attitude. 
  • Ability to take notes from the artistic team and implement necessary changes.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to maintain a stationary position for long periods of time.
