The Plot
Three houses serve as
the centerpiece for a case of glory, error and hysteria. Neighbors Senex (and his domineering wife),
Lycus (and his medley of courtesans) and Erronius (searching a lifetime for his
kidnapped children and their distinctive jewelry) share a street in Rome and an
open-door policy.
The main player in
tonight’s comedy is Pseudolus. He is a slave to the love-struck young Hero (his
name, not his disposition), and yearns for his freedom and bargains for it at
every opportunity. His latest scheme just might work as he deals in love and
virgins, catering to his master’s yearnings for the beautiful Philia, the
paradoxically chaste courtesan next door. Hero agrees to give Pseudolus his
freedom if he can help him win the girl. Philia, however, is pending sale to a
warrior, Miles Gloriosus (whose name describes all he needs you to know about
him), and she refuses to break her contract. Undeterred, Pseudolus finagles the
help of Hysterium (his name and very much his disposition), the slave of Hero’s
mother, Domina.
Pseudolus begins his
elaborate plot by convincing Marcus Lycus, the master of the courtesans, to
release Philia to Hero’s house. Pseudolus will then fake her death and allow
the young lovers to escape. But when Hero’s father, Senex, returns home,
dim-witted Philia mistakes him for her intended, and her well-practiced wiles
remind Senex of exactly what is missing from his marriage to Domina. With three
men eyeing the beauty and his freedom at stake, Pseudolus must keep all of his
plates spinning for the exact grand finale he desires. Pseudolus convinces a
reluctant Hysterium to distract Senex during his son’s escape with the real
Philia. The slaves manage to keep Senex, Lycus and Miles at bay … for the time
being. Domina returns, hoping to find some of the lost magic from her marriage.
Soon the neighborhood
is resplendent in chaos. Erronius, a third neighbor who has long been away
searching for his missing son and daughter, returns home and clears up some of
the confusion freeing Philia of her obligation to the warrior so she can marry
Hero. Miles finds that Lycus has many other enticing options for his bride,
Senex and Domina rekindle old feelings, Hysterium reverts to his harried ways,
and Pseudolus just might be free after all.
