TEACHING ARTIST:  Glenn Casale (California Musical Theatre Artistic Consultant) is a respected figure in international theatre. His Broadway production of Peter Pan was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical in 1999, and A&E’s telecast of the production garnered two Emmy Awards. He directs regularly off-Broadway (Dragapella, Drama Desk and Lucille Lortel Award nominations) and in major regional theatres (Anything Goes, Ovation Award for Best Musical). In partnership with Dutch impresario Joop van den Ende, he has staged Disney’s Beauty and the Beast in Germany, Italy, Spain, Russia, France and the Netherlands. The production was named the Netherlands’ 2006 Musical of the Year and remains the country’s all-time highest grossing musical, and the French production was recently nominated for a Molière Award for Best Musical. Among the artists he has directed are Cathy Rigby (Peter Pan), Lou Diamond Phillips (Camelot), Mark Harmon and George Clooney (Wrestlers), Tyne Daley and Charles Durning (Ballroom), Patrick Cassidy (The Threepenny Opera), Adrienne Barbeau (The Property Known as Garland), Jason Alexander (The Prisoner of Second Avenue) and the legendary Carol Burnett (From the Top and Company). When he became artistic director of California Musical Theatre in December 2008, Glenn’s work was already well known to Sacramento audiences: he had directed more than 50 productions for Music Circus and Broadway Sacramento over the previous 20 years. He gave many musicals their “theatre-in-the-round” world premieres on the Music Circus stage, including a lavishly praised version of Les Misérables in 2007 and Disney’s The Little Mermaid in 2012. He recently directed a smashing new proscenium version of The Little Mermaid at New Jersey’s Paper Mill Playhouse. The production went on to play at many theatres across the country, including Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, Kansas City Starlight, Dallas Summer Musicals, Houston TUTS and Atlanta’s Fox Theatre.
